Laura Pergolizzi, better known as LP, began her career in music over a decade ago; she was born in Long Island and spent most of her life in New York. Her raspy, passionate voice distinguishes her, and her lyrics overflow pure emotion.
Much of her music is influenced by her firsthand experiences. With numerous song credits to her name (including Cher, Rihanna, and The Backstreet Boys, to name a few), LP has a strong history of making music that touches the hearts of those who listen.
LP has also had a fascinating career, having worked with various labels, written for several albums, and had over two dozen song credits to her name. Her music has risen to the top of the charts. Her song “Lost on You” was the number one hit in eighteen countries.
An important figure in the LGBTQIA+ community as well as an androgynous icon. Her most recent offering was “Conversation,” Padrisimo Magazine talked with her about the new record, what is easier for her to write a heartbreak or love song, her plans for the holidays, and much more.
Tell us about your new album ‘Churches’
LP: I'm excited about this record too. I listen to it many times, and I am still not sick of it, which is awesome, especially since I heard these songs more than anybody. I’m just excited for people to listen to it and see where I’ve been at, and hopefully, they get some peace, some solace, and some joy from it. It’s like the most songs I have ever put on a record, so that's fun.
‘Churches’ is an emotional roller coaster
LP: I feel I'm often like that on records. I never do just one emotion, you know what I mean? I feel like I experience all these emotions in a day half the time.
How would you describe your album?
LP: It’s like dating me, I guess. It’s not gonna be boring, you might not like it all the time, but it’s not going to be boring (laughs).
In the song “Everybody’s Falling in Love,” you included the phrase “Te Amo.” It is funny what love will make you do, right?
LP: I was writing that song way before I was with Julieta, months and months before, but yeah, I put that little part in for her.
What is easier to write a heartbreak or love song?
LP: I think both. When I fell in love, different kinds of songs came out. It depends, you know. I let all those emotions float around and flood the system; it’s fun.
At the end of your song “Goodbye,” you say the word ‘goodbye’ in six different languages. Do tell!
LP: I had a burst of inspiration there, and I had that melody, and I was “Oh, that’s what I’m going to do,” and then I was looking at all these different words, I had the obvious ones but “O dabo” was a good one, that's Yoruba. It’s like “100M” people speak “Swahili,” and like “20M” speaks “Yoruba,” so they are in there, Yeah! (laughs).
What was the most difficult word to pronounce?
LP: “Au revoir” it’s hard, it’s fast, it gives me a run for my money at the end there when I sing it live now, it’s like... “Here we go!”
Have you considered singing one of your songs in another language?
LP: I want to do something in Spanish soon. I sang one of Carla Morrison’s songs, not well, and on a voice memo and Julieta had to put it out immediately into the ether, which was cool, so people heard me singing in Spanish, I think people said, “Aw, it’s cute” (laughs).
Some claims accents have an ‘exotic charm’
LP: When I hear someone speak English in an accent, it’s very cute. I think Julieta’s accent is really cute, like Italian friends of mine. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around what I must sound like speaking Spanish.
What are your plans for the holidays this year?
LP: I think I’m going to Mexico for a little. I was gonna go to the Caribbean, but I might stay close because I have to start rehearsals and then go on tour; I have a lot of traveling ahead of me, so I might stay close for a little bit but to Mexico for sure.
You will start touring in January 2022. Are you ready?
LP: It's insane, you know, it’s almost like you feel like you never left in some ways, and it’s wild! I think I need it, and I think fans probably need it, and so we are just gonna have fun together, and I’m gonna sing those new songs and see what you think.

Háblanos de tu nuevo álbum ‘Churches’
LP: Yo también estoy emocionada con este disco. Lo he escuchado muchas veces y todavía no me canso de él, lo cual esta increíble, sobre todo porque he escuchado estas canciones más que nadie, estoy emocionada de que la gente las escuche y vea dónde he estado, y con suerte, obtengan algo de paz, consuelo y alegría. Creo que son canciones que más he puesto en un disco.
‘Churches’ es una montaña rusa emocional, ¿no?
LP: Siento que a menudo soy así en los discos. Nunca tengo una sola emoción. Siento que experimento todas estas emociones en un día la mitad del tiempo.
¿Cómo describirías tu álbum?
LP: Es como salir conmigo, supongo. No va a ser aburrido, puede que no te guste todo el tiempo, pero no será aburrido (risas).
En la canción “Everybody's Falling in Love”, incluiste la frase “Te Amo”. Es curioso lo que el amor te hace hacer, ¿verdad?
LP: Escribí esa canción mucho antes de estar con Julieta, pero sí, puse esa pequeña parte para ella.
Qué es más fácil, ¿escribir una canción de desamor o de amor?
LP: Creo que ambas cosas. Cuando me siento enamorada, surgen diferentes tipos de canciones, todo depende. Dejo que todas esas emociones floten y fluyan.
Al final de la canción “Goodbye”, dices la palabra “adiós” en seis diferentes idiomas. ¡Cuéntame!
LP: Tuve un estallido de inspiración con esa melodía y dije: “Oh, eso es lo que voy a hacer”, y luego estuve mirando todas estas palabras diferentes, tenía las obvias, como “O dabo” que es en “Yoruba”, es como si “100M” de personas hablaran “Swahili” y como “20M” hablaran “Yoruba”; así que allí están (risas).
¿Cuál fue la palabra más difícil de pronunciar?
LP: “Au revoir” es difícil. Es como una carrera por dinero cuando la canto en vivo. Digo... “¡Aquí vamos!”
¿Has pensado en cantar una de tus canciones en otro idioma?
LP: Quiero hacer algo en español pronto. Canté una de las canciones de Carla Morrison, no muy bien, y en una nota de voz y Julieta la puso inmediatamente en la internet, lo cual fue genial, así que la gente me escuchó cantar en español, creo que la gente dijo: “Aw, que linda” (risas).
Algunos afirman que los acentos tienen un "encanto exótico"
LP: Cuando escucho a alguien hablar en inglés con acento, me parece muy lindo. El acento de Julieta me parece muy lindo, como el de mis amigos italianos. Se me hace difícil pensar cómo debo sonar al hablar yo en español (risas).
¿Cuáles son tus planes para las fiestas de este año?
LP: Creo que me voy a ir a México. Iba a ir al Caribe, pero puede que me quede cerca porque tengo ensayos y luego irme de gira. Tengo muchos viajes por delante, así que puede que me quede cerca, pero México por seguro.
Inicias gira en enero de 2022. ¿Estás preparada?
LP: ¡Es una locura! Es casi como si nunca te hubieras ido de alguna manera. Creo que lo necesito y creo que los fans también, así que vamos a divertirnos juntos y voy a cantar las nuevas canciones y ver lo que ustedes piensan.
